Thousands of Australian fans have stormed telco stores in a buying frenzy for the latest Apple iPhone, on sale since midnight.

Customers seemed to forget antennae problems plaguing the iPhone 4 as they poured into Optus, Telstra and Vodafone stores around the country to get their hands on the new units.

Each of the big telcos were sure to make a big event of the launch, as long queues of customers braved cold weather and even rain for a phone with a known flaw.

In Sydney, US pop singer Kelly Rowland greeted customers at Optus, Vodafone offered free alcohol and Telstra put on fine cuisine prepared by MasterChef contestants, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Reception on the iPhone 4 is impaired when held a certain way but Apple is offering buyers free "bumper" cases to rectify the issue.

The iPhone 4 sells from about $860 with all telcos having released new pricing schedules ahead of its release.

Apple has sold more than three million of the smartphones since it was launched a month ago in France, Britain, Germany, Japan and the US.
