A record number of Australian students are enrolled in training places, a new report has revealed.

The National Centre for Vocational Education Research report, released on Thursday, showed the number of students enrolled in government-funded training had increased by 5.4 per cent in 2010.

It means a record 1.8 million Australians are skilling up.

The figures follow news the unemployment rate stayed at the two-year low of 4.9 per cent in June for the fourth month running.

Skills Minister Chris Evans welcomed the data.

"This is an unusually high increase and compares with an average increase since 2001 of just 0.7 per cent per year," he said.
